Attachment Theory is based on the concept that our early attachment experiences with our caregivers shape the adults we become. This theory holds that the bonds we have with our parents is responsible for the bonds that developed in our adult intimate relationships. The goal of this approach is to address the limiting effects of negative early attachment experiences and strengthen the capacity for secure relationships.
This approach targets the thoughts, feelings, behaviours, and interpersonal exchanges that a person has developed as an adaptive function to ensure security and connection to their caregivers. By understanding how our early relationships have shaped our belief systems - regarding how to relate and connect to others - we can discover our unique "attachment styles" and gain a deeper understanding of ourselves.
