This form of therapy aims at relieving the physical sensations of the body that are often associated with trauma. Developed by Dr. Peter Levine, this approach uses mindfulness techniques to get people out of the shutdown/collapse/dorsal vagal response by discharging the energy of unresolved trauma and learn new ways to allow the energy to be discharged without causing retraumatization. This theory is rooted firmly in the belief that trauma is locked and stored within the body, and plays out as physical symptoms whenever the traumatic memory gets triggered.
